This course covers the origin, principles, organization and functions of the American political system. It examines the legislative, executive and judicial branches of the United States as well as the nature and purposes of the nation-state in a democratically oriented society. Topics covered include the Constitution, civil liberties and civil rights, the three branches of the government, political parties, elections, and appropriate comparisons to Illinois government. This course meets Illinois state law requirements for constitutional proficiency and is of interest both to persons planning to pursue a baccalaureate degree and other persons interested in increasing their understanding of the American system of government.
