Lecture) *15 wks This course is a general introduction to American Literature from 1865 through the modern period into the present day, examining major authors from all regions. Learners will explore exclusively American themes reflected in literary works. Topics of examination may include the Emergence of Poetic Voices, the Development of the Narrative, Developments in Women's Writing, Alienation and Literary Experimentation, the New Negro Renaissance, The Beat Movement, The Vietnam Conflict, and other literature to the present day. Through examining the growing identify of America and the individual voice reflected in its literature, learners will gain a greater understanding of how the American character continues to evolve, a better understanding of themselves and what it means to be an American. Prerequisite: Successful Completion of ENG 101 (C or higher).
