Communication and gender focuses on the interactive relationships between gender and communication in contemporary society. During the course, we explore the multiple ways communication in our society creates and perpetuates gender roles; we consider how individuals enact socially created gender differences in public and private settings and how this affects success, satisfaction, and self-esteem; and we connect gender theory and research to our professional and personal experiences. Throughout the course, we discuss not only what is in terms of gender roles, but also what might be and how we might act to improve our individual and collective lives. Prerequisite(s): Course placement into college-level English and Reading OR completion of ENGL 0950 with a grade of C or higher OR completion of RDNG 0940 with a grade of C or higher and qualifying English Placement Exam OR completion of RDNG 0950 with a grade of C or higher and ENGL 0090 with a grade of C or higher OR completion of ESOL 0051 with a grade of C or higher and ESOL 0052 with a grade of C or higher. Recommendation(s): ENGL 1020 with a grade of C or higher OR ENGL 1021 with a grade of C or higher or concurrently enrolled.
