Resultants of force systems; equilibrium, analysis of forces acting on members of trusses, frames: forces due to friction; scalar and vector algebra approach; centroids; moments of inertia; introduction to principle of virtual work; dynamics; displacement, velocity, and acceleration of a particle; relation between forces acting on rigid bodies and the changes in motion produced; translation; rotation; plane motion; solutions using the principles of force, mass and acceleration; work and energy; impulse and momentum; vibrations. Writing assignments, as appropriate to the discipline, are part of the course. Prerequisite: Physics 235 and Mathematics 208 or Consent of Department Chairperson. 250 minutes per week. 5 credit hours.
