Introduces the literature of the American people whose roots are in Africa, emphasizing the period of the diaspora, the Middle Passage, and the period of slavery. Addresses the African origins of African American writing, the role of oral storytelling, the slave narrative, and the earliest literary publications. Focuses on both oral and written texts that represent the interests, aspirations, and experiences of African Americans. Prerequisite: WR 115 and RD 115 or equivalent placement test scores.
