3 hours credit (3 hours lecture) Survey of this region from the rise of Islam in the 600s through the present. It discusses the interplay of various peoples and cultures, and the powerful Islamic empires of the Caliphs, Seljuks, and Ottomans. Special emphasis is given to the impact of European and American political and economic imperialism, the spread of Arab nationalism and Islamic fundamentalism, and the region's current strategic position in global affairs. This course requires at least one paper using a documentation format. (offered spring semester in odd years)
