3 hours credit (3 hours lecture) An introductory survey of selected major themes in African history. Emphasis will be on Africa's place in world history since 1500, with special attention paid to the legacy of colonialism, the interaction of Africans and the outside world, and the challenges faced by Africans since independence in the 1950s and 1960s. This course requires at least one paper using a documentation format. (offered spring semester in even years)
