Refer to ENG 270 (Alpha) for additional course description. ENG 270E is a study of selected major authors from classical, medieval, renaissance, and non-western cultures. In addition to the general ENG 270 (Alpha) competencies, upon successful completion of ENG 270E, the student should be able to: Analyze a work of literature with respect to the historical contexts that have informed its production and both current and past reception. Demonstrate ways that historical and cultural forces shape literary texts as well as ways that texts inform cultural and historical realities. 8 Analyze some significant works of world literature, their characteristic themes and techniques. Use basic concepts and terminology particular to literary analysis when analyzing a work of literature. Identify major themes in literature, explore their implications, and analyze their basic assumptions. Analyze structure; explain how form contributes to meaning. Evaluate the artistry of literary works and analyze techniques employed by writers as artists. Use evidence to support opinions and ideas regarding literary works, especially different literary problems related to specific historical periods. Produce clear, effective, and well-supported written opinions and responses to literature.
