3 credits (Fall Semester) This course provides an overview of graphic arts, which encompasses computer-based document layout, composi-tion, typesetting, illustration, scanning, image modification, reproduction and distribution. It also explores the history and theory of effective mass communication from prehis-toric cave art to invention of the printing press and modern graphic communication techniques using computers and the internet. The class examines communication models revolving around imagery, type, delivery systems and tech-nology. The student will be able to understand and estab-lish the effects of a clear visual message. Learning modules include slide shows, field trips, guest speakers, discussion, lectures and hands-on application with computers and the internet to promote an understanding of graphic communi-cations and visual messages and their impact on society.
