(2.0 hours) This course introduces basic skills in preparation for Biotechnology II. Topics and techniques may include but are not limited to: safety, good laboratory and manufacturing practices, agarose gel electrophoresis, plasmid mapping, plasmid deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) mini-preparations, Southern and Western blotting, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays, sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel exlectrophoresis of proteins, polymerase chain reaction, DNA sequencing, DNA and protein chromatography, plant cell culture, and/or other appropriate molecular techniques used in biotechnology laboratory settings. Two one-hour lecture sessions and two three-hour laboratory sessions per week. Prerequisite: BI 2403/2411 and BY 1102/1111. Corequisite: BY 2113
