(3 Credit Hours) This course involves the application of sociological concepts and principles to the description and critical analysis of major social problems of modern societies. A founding assumption to this course is that it is crucial for people to be able to sub ject their own society to scrutiny in order to arrive at intelligent assessments of particular social problems. It is equally important that people understand the general patterns of societal development that often cause or aggravate these problems. Within this framework this course will examine various problems including those of wealth and poverty, class stratification, race and ethnicity, crime and deviance, gender, and problems of our consumer society.
