Includes the study of anatomy and physiology, which introduces the student to basic structure and function of each system of the body and their contributions to the body as a whole. Emphasis is placed on anatomical structures of the head and neck and their effect on chewing, salivation, circulation, and respiration. A unit on microbiology/oral pathology includes historical contributions to the study of microbiology, recognition of and growth patterns, and means of destruction. Body defense to inflammation, healing and repair, various types of lesions of the oral cavity, including cancer, and secondary oral disorders is also included. The study of therapeutics includes a brief history of drugs, methods of administration, drug effects, and commonly used drugs in the treatment of oral lesions, anxiety, and pain control.
