3 credits (Spring Semester) This course surveys the development of American jazz music from its roots in the late 19th century to the present decade. Students will become familiar with the various stylistic jazz eras through lecture, listening, analysis, discus-sion and student projects. Students will learn varieties and lineage of an important American musical art and acquire the tools to identify and compare various historical styles.
