This course is intended to develop a greater awareness of critical writing in the arts as it relates to magazines, newspapers and journals that explore critical discourse and critical analyses of contemporary arts. The course entails reading major articles from various national and international art journals and magazines. Reviewing selected essays by such authors as John Berger, Robert Hughes, Lucy Lippard, Dave Hickey, Calvin Tomkins and Adam Gopnik creates an opportunity to measure the success or failure of other authors. Students also have the opportunity to meet with art critics, debate ideas and have their critical writings examined and analyzed in a supportive atmosphere. Cross-listed as ARTS 132. Offered: Fall.
