3 credits A sculpture course designed for the beginning student who desires to learn the art of stone carving. Historical and contemporary stone sculpture will be studied as a basis for understanding the medium. Students will experience the entire process of creating a stone sculpture: choosing the stone, developing a design, making simple hand-carving tools, mastering the use of power carving tools, finishing and display of the completed work. Regular discussions and critiques of class work will be used to further an understanding of technical and formal considerations in the work. Repeatable.
