Primary subject matter for this course is an in-depth understanding of the following: The Milky Way Galaxy (our home galaxy which provides data and points of reference); Normal Galaxies (the usual entities making up the largescale structure of the universe); Active Galaxies and Quasars (unusual dynamic entities and observations at the edge of the observable universe); Cosmology (questions, theories and models of the past and future of the universe, the Big Bang, the geometry of space-time, the cosmic background radiation, dark matter, dark energy); The Early Universe (origins of atoms, nuclei, and formation of structure); and Life in the Universe (frameworks, questions, searches)
