4 credits The goal of this course is for students to increase their ability to understand and implement diverse communication styles as this relates to gendered communication. We will explore how Communication, Gender and Culture intersect to influence perceptions and expectations of gender roles. Students will also learn the advantages and disadvantages of implementing masculine and/or feminine styles of verbal and nonverbal communication in close relationships, the educational setting, within organizations and analyze their own communication style. This will be accomplished by exploring theoretical approaches to gendered identity and the development and influence of rhetorical movements, family communication, culture of origin and popular culture, educational setting, and media contributions to the formation of gendered identity. May be offered through Distance.
