This is an introductory course in the Associate Degree Nursing program which orients the student to the role of the nurse. Emphasis is placed on the nursing process as students begin to develop skills in helping patients of all ages to meet their basic needs. Areas of study include nutrition, wellness, growth and development, pharmacology, medical and surgical asepsis, patient instruction and caring. The student will learn basic nursing skills needed to implement the nursing process, with emphasis on technology, communication, and critical thinking skills in caring for patients with common health problems. Local hospitals and nursing homes will be used for clinical experiences. Various methods of learning with a critical thinking approach will be used to meet the course objectives. 8 hours class, 6 hours lab. Prerequisites: BIO 2511 and BIO 2513 Anatomy & Physiology I/ lab and BIO 2521 and BIO 2523 Anatomy & Physiology II/lab. Concurrent enrollment in NUR 1100; previous or concurrent enrollment in EPY 2533 Human Growth and Development, and BIO 2921 and BIO 2923 Microbiology/ lab.
