5.00 credits (5.00 lec) This course is a comprehensive introduction to Mandarin Chinese. Students will learn the pronunciation system, character writing and basic skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing; master standard pronunciation, the four tones, basic grammatical patterns, and vocabulary that is highly relevant to a beginning Chinese learner; lay a firm foundation for their future study of Chinese and be able to function in a Chinese-speaking environment. Students will accomplish these goals not only with the language skills, but also with Chinese cultural awareness. Prerequisites: Placement into READ 0200 or placement into ESOL 0052 or completion of READ 0100 or ESOL 0042 with faculty recommendation into ESOL 0052; placement into ENGL 1110 or completion of ENGL 0900 or ESOL 0051.
