CSCI 2900 - Topics in Computer Science

Institution:
Normandale Community College
Subject:
Description:
This is an introductory course in the mathematics and algorithmics of cryptology, the subject of how to make ciphers and break them. After a brief overview of the history of cryptology we will look at contemporary cryptosystems. Both symmetric and public key cryptosystems will be introduced. The math used in this course will be drawn from the modular arithmetic of number theory, linear algebra, and some probability. The course will culminate with an exploration of how quantum computing can be used to catastrophically attack RSA- type public-key cryptosystems. The course will provide the minimal quantum mechanics necessary. We will also enumerate the possible successor public-key cryptosystems.
