3.00 credits (2.00 lec/1.00 lab) This course provides a background for comprehensive understanding of gem materials. It teaches students how to identify the physical and optical properties of gems, and how to advise clients on the selection and best use of gems. This is a unit of loupe-based instruction. A text, notebook, loupe, locking tweezers and gemstone durability chart are mandatory. (Normal visual acuity and color perception are necessary.) Prerequisites: Placement into READ 0200 or placement into ESOL 0052 or completion of READ 0100 or ESOL 0042 with faculty recommendation into ESOL 0052.
