3.00 credits (3.00 lec) Around the world, women are engaged in struggles to address issues of survival, identity, and social change in order to make a better world for themselves, their families, and their communities. These efforts, in turn, have influenced the emergence of an international women's movement and a new conception of human rights and global action. This course examines the development and intersection of these local and international women's movements through case studies from selected countries in Africa, Asia, the Middle East and Latin America. Students will examine issues of status, diversity and cross-cultural understanding as they explore the different types of problems and challenges women face in other parts of the world and the different kinds of strategies they are creating to make change. Fulfills MnTC Goal Areas 5 and 8. Prerequisites: Placement into READ 0200 or placement into ESOL 0052 or completion of READ 0100 or ESOL 0042 with faculty recommendation into ESOL 0052.
