Topics covered include an examination of pre-Colombian civilizations, the Spanish and Portuguese conquests, colonial South America, the independence movements, and modern South America. Selected countries are studied individually. The course emphasizes the cultural, economic and political aspects of South American history. This course is offered in an independent study format.
