Credits 1 (3 Lab Hrs/Wk) - W This course is designed for students interested in learning the basics of backcountry winter mountain travel. Students will learn about and practice travel skills using modern snowshoes, backcountry skis or a splitboard. Students will learn how to choose a snowshoe or ski that is appropriate for the type of trip and snow conditions they might pursue. This course will also cover the essentials of winter day-long outings which include: winter trip preparation, appropriate clothing selection, winter backcountry hazards including avalanche avoidance, minimum impact techniques, winter weather patterns of the Pacific Northwest and introduction to snow morphology.
