This course is an introducti on to communicati on methods used by the deaf that includes non-verbal communicati on development of 700 basic signs and beginning American Sign Language (ASL). The course is designed to introduce ASL, a visual-gestural language, used by the deaf community in the United States and Canada. The focus will be on the development of grammar vocabulary, and culturally-appropriate uses of ASL through natural everyday conversati onal situati ons. Communicati ve competence in ASL ulti mately depends upon one's ability to sati sfactorily progress through structured acti viti es. This course is intended for students who have not previously studied ASL or want to maintain profi ciency in their sign language skills. This is a three credit hour course.
