This course is 150 clock hours and is approved by New Mexico Department of Health, Health Facility Licensing and Certi fi cati on Bureau. The course is designed to teach the student the necessary knowledge and skills to deliver responsible and safe health care for residents in nursing and long-term care faciliti es under qualifi ed supervision of a nurse. Close personal care requires a sensiti ve and knowledgeable caregiver, who has a good understanding of pati ent needs, as well as, personal interacti on with other health care team members. This course includes an introducti on to health care and the role of the nurse aide; understanding the body structure, functi on and needs; safety in the provision of care; and sati sfactory performance of basic care skills. The classroom and nursing skills laboratory porti on of the course is taught at a NMJC facility. The course has specifi c requirements: CPR, TB screening, malpracti ce insurance, Rubella ti ter, physical exam, and a criminal background check. The background check will identi fy a felony convicti on which will render the applicant ineligible for admission to the course. A felony convicti on disqualifi es an applicant from parti cipati ng in the clinical porti on of this course and other nursing courses. The clinical porti on of the course is conducted in a licensed, certi fi ed area health care agency. The student must sati sfactorily meet the objecti ves of the course's computerized exams, laboratory skills performance, and clinical practi ce to be eligible for course completi on. Successful completi on of this course enti tles the student to take the New Mexico Nurse Aide Skills and Writt en Exam (computerized). This is a fi ve credit hour course with a lab component.
