Prerequisite: Acceptance into the current Program in Practical Nursing at Mineral Area College. This course was designed to provide basic knowledge and nursing skills upon which all future care is based. Communication in a nurse-client relationship, maintenance of a safe environment, body mechanics, assessment skills, utilization of observational and manipulative skills and equipment to perform physical examinations, documentation (including spelling, punctuation, and common medical abbreviations), legal and ethical implications, cultural considerations, formulation of a plan of care utilizing the nursing process, the infectious process cycle, preventing spread of communicable disease, sterile technique, personal hygiene, urine and bowel elimination, care of the inactive client, wound assessment and care, care of the surgical client, airway management, pain management, and care of the terminally ill are emphasized.
