General Education Attributes1, 2, 4, 8, 9 This course examines the African American experience from the emergence of ancient African kingdoms through the Middle Passage to slavery in the Americas, from the abolitionist movement through the Civil War and Reconstruction. It discusses the evolution of black American slavery as a legal, social, economic and political institution. This course also studies African American religion, art, music and other contributions to American culture to 1877.
