Prerequisite: None. This historical survey of American literature from 1865 to the present will cover the major writers and texts of this period. It will emphasize the transition of American literature from the romantic outlooks of the pre-Civil War period to the development of "realistic" and "naturalistic" practices in response to the war and Darwinian ideas in science.
