This course focuses on the care of the childbearing family. The student's use of core concepts and competencies is expanded to include nursing care of obstetrical and newborn clients from diverse cultural backgrounds and experiences. The course evolves around nursing, nursing process, and obstetrical and newnborn clients experiencing variations and alterations in life functions: fluid/gas transport, elimination, nutritional/metabolism, sensory, activity, and safety. Health promotion, communication, adn legal-ethical aspects of obstetrical nursing care are also explored.
