5 cr. Focuses on general chemistry with emphasis on the applications of chemical principles to the life sciences. Topics include structure and properties of matter; energy; atomic structure and bonding; gas laws; chemical reactions; reaction rates and equilibrium; and water, solutions, and colloids. First term of a three-term sequence dealing with the molecular basis for life.
