3 hours credit This course establishes the basis for more specialized knowledge and competencies, which will become the foundation for the student's future practice as a registered nurse. Emphasis is placed on the integrated concepts of cultural awareness, caring, health maintenance and promotion and teaching/learning. The student will interact with faculty, peers and clients as they explore communication skills and techniques and discover how they are essential to nursing practice. The student builds knowledge in order to be prepared for the dynamic changing roles, which occur in the nursing profession today. The nursing process is introduced and utilized as a systematic method to meet basic client needs. Faculty has created a learning community of diverse settings and clients where people learn together beyond the classroom. Teaching-learning activities include a variety of learning opportunities with emphasis placed on the development of student creativity and critical thinking. The student will be introduced to Nursing Interventions of the Basic Physiologic Domain, including nutrition, safety, and self-care facilitation. Prerequisites: Concurrent health assessment course and child or developmental psychology and NURS0121.
