4 hours credit Math Essentials emphasizes skill building in the operations of basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division as they relate to whole numbers, fractions, and decimals. These basic skills are then applied to the areas of ratio and proportion, percents, measurement, basic geometric concepts, and statistics. Algebra is introduced with the study of signed numbers, algebraic expressions, and basic equations. Students will be expected to use appropriate technology as one tool to achieve competency in Math Essentials. Prerequisite(s): There is no prerequisite for this course. Mandatory placement for first time college students or first time math students is based on the ACCUPLACER Elementary Algebra test. The following scores determine placement in math courses: 0-30 MATH-097 Math Essentials 31-70 MATH-099 Elementary Algebra 71-99 MATH-0104 Intermediate Algebra 100-120 Enrollment is open First-time college students who have taken the ACT or SAT within the last 24 months may be exempt from taking the placement evaluation in Math if their score is ACT 23/SAT 575 or higher in math.
