Prerequisites: The student must meet the entrance requirements and be accepted into the surgical technology program. Applies principles of medical and surgical asepsis. Focuses on preparation and maintenance of the sterile field, identification, care and handling of instruments, sutures, supplies and equipment. Emphasis is on basic skills of the surgical technologist in preparation for and during the operative procedure. Practices maintaining a safe client environment and includes the responsibilities and duties of surgery personnel. Common surgical techniques and procedures. 3 hrs. lecture, 4 hrs. lab/week. Course taught at MCC-Penn Valley Community College. Students should contact the Penn Valley coordinator of surgical technology about the class meeting times and beginning and ending dates of classes.
