Prerequisite: MUS 141 or passing equivalency test Harmony II is a continuation of the study of the harmonic system used in music composed from 1650 to 1900 and still in use in certain areas of music composition. The course covers use of non-harmonic tones, supertonic and dominant sevenths, functions of the submediant and mediant triads, advanced melodic writing and secondary dominant chords. Student will learn to harmonize melodies at the keyboard and play simple chord progressions on the piano. Music of the period will be analyzed. Selected software programs will enhance student skills and understanding. 3 hrs./wk. This course is typically taught in the spring semester.
