Topics include the structure and properties of carbon compounds, the classification of organic molecules by functional groups and the structure, properties and reactions and stereochemistry of alkanes. Prerequisites CHEM 1220 or an equivalent General Chemistry course. Organic Chemistry I is designed to provide a comprehensive study of the chemistry of carbon compounds. This course is designed for the student pursuing an academic transfer degree in chemistry, biology, chemical engineering and medical pre-professional students and includes both the lecture and laboratory components. The course will be taught as three courses and all three courses must be completed to transfer as a semester length course. Organic Chemistry I and II are each taught as a three course sequence. ALL three courses must be successfully completed to transfer as a semester length course.
