This course is an introduction to the visual language of Art. It deals with understanding art and why and how artists create. It is designed for non-Art majors, though art students may find it useful preparation for Art History courses. Students will learn about the formal elements and principles of art, as well as a variety of studio techniques used by artists. The course includes a broad overview of Art through the Ages that give a context for understanding specific works of art. Although much of the course relies on lecture and book learning, exposure to actual artwork in local art museums and galleries, is an integral component of the learning experience.
