This course introduces students to a basic understanding of the chemical and physical principles underlying the nature and behavior of materials. It seeks to give answers to questions such as why glass is transparent and brittle while steel is opaque and strong, or why copper conducts heat and electricity while plastic and rubber do neither but are elastic. (3 hrs. lect.; 3 hrs. lab. per week)
