2 Cr. Hrs This course teaches advanced microbiology for surgical first assistants. The course includes identifying microbes through stains and cultures and using microscopes. The course includes a discussion of opportunistic microbes, common surgical site infections, antibiotic prophylaxis and therapy and special consideration on the immunecompromised patient. Prerequisites: this course may be taken independently of the others. Students who are interested in this course must be CST, RN, LPN, Physician Assistants or must seek instructor permission for admission. The course is appropriate for CEU's for Certified Surgical Technologists.
