This course is designed to be a lab practicum in techniques and strategies for handling and training a young horse. Students will learn the behavior of young horses and the appropriate steps necessary to teach a young horse to accept a halter and grooming, to lead properly, stand to be tied, load into a trailer, ground training and saddle-breaking process. Students acquire the technical and theoretical knowledge of starting and training colts in the stock seat style of riding. Evaluation of student performance will be based upon attendance, attitude and willingness to learn, and progression of the young horse?s training. All students enrolling in this course should have proficient riding ability. The instructor reserves the right to ask the student to demonstrate riding ability if the instructor deems this necessary. (3 credit hours, 16 lecture hours, 32 lab hours)
