This course introduces students to the profession of social work and provides an overview of the professional knowledge, skills, and values necessary for generalist social work practice. Students are introduced to the historical evolution of social work, the history of social welfare, the various fi elds of social work practice nationwide and in the Appalachian region, and general systems theory. This course also contains a service-learning component, allowing students to spend 20 hours during the semester in a social service agency within their community. F, S
