Prerequisite: ENG 101 completed or concurrently enrolled. A survey of African American history from the time of European settlement of North America to emancipation. Topics include the impact of Africa on African American life; the origins and evolution of American slavery; the rise of a distinctive African American culture; the formation of free black society after the Revolution; the black struggle against slavery; and the turbulence of the Civil War era. Satisfies TMCC and UNR Diversity core curriculum.
