Description:
Skill development in the performance of a variety of blood collection methods using proper techniques and universal precautions. Includes vacuum collection devices, syringes, capillary skin puncture, butterfly needles and blood culture, and specimen collection on adults, children, and infants. Emphasis on infection prevention, proper patient identification, labeling of specimens and quality assurance, specimen handling, processing, and accessioning. Concurrent enrollment in MLAB 1260 required. Students who are certified phlebotomists, or have recent documented experience as a phlebotomist may request credit for this course. Each request will be considered individually and must be approved by the MLT Program Director. A grade of "C" or better is required for graduation. (R)
