Description:

This course will use Mexico City as an on-site exploratory classroom. Mexico City is the world's largest city and home to magnificent architecture from over 1000 years of multi-cultural influences. The class will explore the idea of drawing from nature and architecture initially in the sketchbook format so that the student can describe the physical world in a small and portable format. Students will realize drawing opportunities that come from the freedom presented by small sketchbooks as a means to create a source book of ideas. Prior to departure, a 3-hour lecture at Moore will introduce students to the ideas, tools and goals of sketchbook drawing. While on site in Mexico, students will be drawing every day while also viewing outstanding examples of sketchbook drawing through slides or gallery visits. Three 3-hour evening critiques will be used to encourage reflection and experimentation. The trip part of this class will occur over a period of eight days in Mexico City during which time students will visit a vast variety of sites and drawing locales. There will be daily individual critiques and dialogue. After returning to Moore, students will meet for five 6-hour studio classes in order to develop in other formats and possibly other media more sustained and complex drawings based on the original sketchbook discoveries. Students will be expected to isolate ideas from the source material in their sketchbooks and then enrich and integrate this work into expanded and more sustained works.
