This course explores the spirit as well as the letter of the law regarding residential design for the disabled. The first few classes include a one-hour lecture on one aspect of disability such as visual/hearing impairments, wheelchair use, limited mobility and age-related issues. This is followed by a small design project related to the lecture. The class will look at the specifics of designing both indoor and outdoor areas that will include the following: kitchens, bathrooms, and closets. It will also consider the appropriate fixture selections for living rooms and bedrooms, parking and ramps and transitional spaces. The rest of the classes are devoted to applying the principles of "beautiful and barrier-free" design to a residence for a disabled client. This is also called "Universal Design" which is good design that includes everybody. Satisfies: Studio Elective
