Topics will include early civilizations such as the Maya, Aztec, and Incas; the confrontation between the Amerindians and the European colonizers; the development of Latin American societies under Portuguese and Spanish rule; slavery; the colonial economy; and finally, independence movements. Foreign studies. Prerequisites: Sophomore standing or permission of the instructor. 3 credits.
