An exploration of the question "What is American culture?" by focusing on cultural themes and values through the study of social history, literature, music and the visual arts against a backdrop of scientific and technical achievement. Likely to be included are such figures as Bradstreet, Jefferson, Emerson, Whitman, Remington, Copland, Hughes, Ellington, Edison, Bernstein, Ives, Gershwin, Brooks, and Momaday.
