This course will explore the political, social, economic, and cultural developments in Germany from the period after the French Revolution to the present. It will also examine the various interpretive approaches provided by historians of Germany to account for its destructive history. Topics that will be covered include: the impact of the French Revolution on German nationalism and the development of German politics; Bismarck and German unification; the state, politics, economics, culture, and society under the German empire; Germany and World War I; the Weimar Republic; Hitler, National Socialism, and the Holocaust; the division of Germany after World War II; the revolution of 1989. 3 credit hours. Satisfies ADR II.
