Fall-Spring Semesters This course will enable pre-service teachers to understand how to utilize a school-based, systematic approach in dealing with complex student issues such as substance abuse and mental health problems. Student Assistance Seminar examines the etiology of problems in adolescence especially as they relate to school failure. Students will understand the purpose of student assistance programs and the value of using a systematic research based approach in removing barriers to learning. The use of professional behavioral observation and reporting will be stressed and the limitations of extending assistance consistent with the current legal framework will be discussed. Students will develop the skills necessary to engage parents and students in productive conversations about non-academic issues. Teaching methodologies employed will include discussion, case study analysis and simulations 1 credit hour.
