The course objectives are to acquire the skills and knowledge to translate the human form into the sculptural form. Emphasis is placed upon developing observation and modeling skills to manipulate clay upon an armature to produce free standing sculptural figures. Mold making will be taught as a method of translating the figures produced into a different medium. The main methods that will be taught are piece molding and waste molding alongside an introduction to the techniques of making flexible molds in alginate or silicone rubber. There will then follow an introduction into the various ways in which a surface treatment can be applied to the finished piece. An introduction will be given to the ideas traditions and concepts as they pertain to the figure. Class critiques are designed to introduce vocabulary and explore concepts specific to sculpture.
